PRESS RELEASE
This year on 18 July, the former president of the Republic of South Africa (RSA), Mr Nelson Mandela will turn 94 years. Each year, people across the world join in the celebrations to mark his popular birthday declared by the United Nations as the International Mandela Day. The occasion to celebrate the Mandela Day creates a worthy platform for humanity to entrench true democracy by lending a hand to deal with, among others, poverty, unemployment and inequality.
The rationale behind this effort is to strengthen the spirit of volunteerism towards social development. This will go a long way to contribute towards the legacy of the visionary Mandela underpinned by ethos such as, democracy, peace, human rights and above all, ubuntu!
The Limpopo provincial government has lined up activities throughout the province to celebrate the Mandela Day. This include cleaning campaigns, refurbishing of dilapidated public institutions such as schools and clinics, give moral and material support to the residents of old age home and other elderly members of our society and donate blankets and food parcels to poverty-stricken families. The people of Limpopo are therefore urged to volunteer 67 minutes of their time in support of the activities referred to above.
Government encourages the people of Limpopo, South Africa, Africa and the world to heed the clarion call to take action, inspire change and make every day Mandela Day! Humanity all over the world should never waver in the determination to create a new world order of prosperity for all. Let us all support the Mandela's legacy and bring hope where there is despair in a quest to make our world a better place.
South African Government, Pretoria
