Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has launched a new cleaning programme to turn the city centre into one of the cleanest cities in Africa.
Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba is known for his work at cleaning up around Johannesburg, even cleaning up the streets by removing gangs, brothels and other criminal activity. In February of 2017he was spotted raiding the notorious Rosettenvile area with the JMPD and SAPS.
His latest project, the AreSebetsebeng initiative, was launched recently and aims to work with volunteers and stakeholders on a monthly basis to clean up inner-city Johannesburg.
“There’s no way that you can drive economic growth in a filthy city, we must get the basics right,”
“The campaign seeks to unite Joburg residents to work together with government and skilled stakeholders in ensuring that the City of Johannesburg becomes clean,”
“The largest component of this campaign will focus on cleaning the City, to position it as a job-creating investment and a City which its residents can be proud to call home.”
By getting community members and other volunteers involved, they hope to inspire people to become more conscious of their waste and to keep the environment around them clean. Promoting a culture of reducing, reusing and recycling waste might even lead to Johannesburg becoming the cleanest city in Africa. Read the full story here.
