President Museveni is being accused by the opposition of preparing his son to take over power when he hands over. The president’s son Lt Col Kainerugaba Muhoozi commands a Special Forces unit and was currently given control of the elite presidential guard.
Opposition spokesperson Mr. Hussein Kyanjo says the president is turning the presidency into a monarchical affair and his actions clearly show he is preparing his son to become the next leader of the Uganda people. Several relative of the president hold key positions in his government. The president’s wife was appointed last year to the cabinet. The army spokesman has dismissed the accusation on the grounds that the president’s son is like any other Ugandan individual and has the right to stand for presidency if he is willing. His appointment comes because he is highly qualified. Mr. Muhoozi is said to have undergone military training in the UK and US. President Museveni has been in power since1987 and will be seeking re-election in the country’s upcoming election next year.
