Nigeria’s candidate for Africa Union, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Fatima Mohammed, has lost to Algeria candidate, Smail Chegui. Mr Chegui, a former Algerian Consul-General and Ambassador to Ethiopia, was re-elected on Monday.

Writing on her Facebook page, Fatima Mohammed wrote: “Contrary to various media reports and information being circulated on social media, Nigeria lost its bid for the position of Commissioner for Peace and Security, #AU Commission to the incumbent Smail Chergui of Algeria.

“We wish him the best and we shall continue to work together towards building a prosperous and peaceful continent. #28thAUSummit #Elections #AfricanUnion.”
