Two Swiss businessmen were denied entry into Libya because of a long standing diplomatic row between the two countries. The two businessmen were accused of flouting immigration laws and operating businesses illegally in the country. One of the businessmen was cleared of his charges and has been allowed to leave the country while the other Mr. Goeldi is still being kept at the Swiss embassy. The Libyan government issued a Monday deadline for the accused to be handed over to Libyan authorities.
The Swiss embassy was surrounded when the deadline for today approached. Analysts are certain the row is in retaliation for the arrest of the son of Libyan leader and his wife for allegedly abusing two domestic workers last year while staying at a luxury hotel in the Swiss capital. The charges were later dropped.
